Sun Protection

I got this off of a cocconut oil forum.

Sun Protection
One of the most interesting facts about people who live in tropical climates like the Philippines, where the people are constantly exposed to the rays of the sun year round, is that skin cancer is almost unheard of in these places. Here in the US we are constantly warned about the dangers of exposure to the sun, and yet the sun helps our bodies produce much needed nutrients for our skin, such as Vitamin D, which has been shown to prevent cancer.2
Once again we see that coconut oil is probably one of the main reasons people in tropical climates can spend so much time in the sun and not suffer from skin cancer. Coconut oil has wonderful antioxidant properties that protect the skin from free radical damage. Also, when coconut oil is consumed and used topically on our skin, it helps our bodies absorb other nutrients more effectively as well, such as Vitamin E, another powerful antioxidant nutrient that protects the skin.
I am fair skinned but used VCO as a sunscreen in Florida last summer. My family thought I was crazy. I did not burn although everyone else did (with their toxic sunscreen). One day, I did get a little too much sun, and was a little red, but I put the VCO on it and it was gone by the next day. So try it, and see, just be sensible about the sun, nothing can protect you if you stand in the hot sun for a very long time. Rachel (Coconut Diet Forums)
I just got back from my 7-day trip to Jamaica. I used VCO exclusively as my sunscreen. I had no burns and my tan is even and golden. I am somewhat fair-skinned. Most of my time was spent in the shade, but I spent a good amount of time floating around on the water each day. My husband is even fairer and he did get pink slightly on his shoulders, at which time he applied both sunscreen and VCO to that area (VCO everywhere else). His tan is also pretty dark. People kept commenting on what nice color we were getting, ha ha. Marnie (Coconut Diet Forums)
It should be noted that when reports like this are made in our discussion group, invariably some will try using Virgin Coconut Oil exclusively as a sunscreen and go out and get burned! Some have even reported that sometimes the coconut oil works wonderfully as a sunscreen, while at other times they seem to get burned. It seems that the oils you put into your body are just as important as what you onto your body in regards to sun protection. We have found that if one eats foods loaded with polyunsaturated oils, generally they will burn more in the sun. It is theorized that when one eats foods cooked in polyunsaturated vegetable oils, often with trans fatty acids, that one is putting oxidized lipids into their skin tissue that are causing free radical damage, and more susceptible to burning in the sun. So if you just got done eating some french fries from a fast food restaurant, you may be more susceptible to sun burn!

Plug in Fragrance

A little over a week ago I was in Bath and Body Works. Oh, how I love all the stuff there! They tried to sell me one of their new plug in fragrances. I told the girl that I do not use those since they have been known to cause a lot of house fires. Today I received this e-mail from my brother so I thought I would post it here.

This is one of those e-mails that if you don't send it, rest assured someone on your list will suffer for not reading it.
The original message was written by a lady whose brother and wife learned a hard lesson this past week.
Their house burnt down. Nothing left but ashes. They have good insurance so the house will be replaced and most of the contents. That is the good news.
However, they were sick when they found out the cause of the fire. The insurance investigator sifted through the ashes for several hours.
He had the cause of the fire traced to the master bathroom. He asked her sister-in-law what she had plugged in The bathroom. She listed the normal things....curling iron, blow dryer. He kept saying to her, "No, this would be something that would disintegrate at high temperatures".
Then her sister-in-law Remembered she had a Glade Plug-In, in the bathroom.
The investigator had the one of those "Aha" moments. He said that was the cause of the fire. He said he has seen more house fires started with the plug-in type room fresheners than anything else. He said the plastic they are made from is THIN. He also said that in every case there was nothing left to prove that it even existed. When the investigator looked in the wall plug, the two prongs left from the plug-in were still in there.
Her sister-in-law had the one of the plug-ins that had a small nightlight built in it. She said she had noticed that the light would dim and then finally go out. She would walk in to the bathroom a few hours later, and the light would be back on again.
The investigator said that the unit was getting too hot, and would dim and go out rather than just blow the light bulb. Once it cooled down it would come back on. That is a warning sign The investigator said he personally wouldn't have any type of plug in fragrance device anywhere in his house. He has seen too many places that have been burned down due to them.
PLEASE PASS THIS ON TO ALL THE PEOPLE IN YOUR ADDRESS BOOK. NOT ONLY COULD IT SAVE SOMEONE'S HOUSE, BUT IT COULD SAVE SOMEONE'S LIFE.

Mosquito Bite Itch

Just last night I was asked about the itching of mosquito bites. I was not looking it up, but happened to read this little tid-bit today.
"When mosquito bites have you itching like crazy, reach for a bottle of antiseptic Mouthwash. Moisten a tissue with it, hold it on the bite for about 15 seconds, and kiss that itch good-bye."

Tealights, Tealights, Tealights

As most of you know, I love to have candles on all over the place! Because I love the wonderful scents that can be found in candles (especially the ones I buy at the 5B&Co) I end up burning too many at one time and mixing the scents. Last year I decided to stock up on a lot of tea lights. I burn those in the candle holders but only burn one scented one in each room! Now, if I would just quit giving away all my wonderful smelling votives!

Suitcase Tags

I don't recall where and when I learned this but I was recently sharing with my mom and sis to not put their name and address on those suitcase tags! It lets people know where there might be an empty house and robberies have occurred because of that. Just put your name and phone number!

Stinky Car

With all the rain and flooding we have had around here I have heard and had conversations about stinky cars due to the rain getting in the car. One of the best ways to get rid of the smell is to put the pet cedar chips on the carpet. It absorbs the moisture and the smell!

How Loud Is Your Music

Today I subbed in a class with a sign language interpreter. We were talking about noise levels and what they do to our hearing. She was explaining to me that each time we are around loud noises we lose a little bit of our hearing! She also explained to me that we would be surprised as to how low the level of noise is before it starts to do the damage! I guess we all need to learn to turn down our music and our TV. We also need to learn to be gentle in our communication with one another! :?)

Antibiotics - to take or not to take

It is very easy for doctors to prescribe antibiotics. They are a wonderful thing to have around. However, our bodies can get used to them quite easily and then they are not effective in time of great need.
I was very careful about when my children got their antibiotics.
I got my tooth pulled yesterday and with that comes a subscription for an antibiotic. I have decided not to take it this time. It is the doctor's preventative measure.
My preventative measure will be to have no sugar until it heals! Sugar does something to the white cells and interferes with infection fighting.
I will basically eat fruit for the next few days....it takes fruit 20 minutes to digest and allows the body to work on healing. It takes meat 9 hours!
I will drink lots of
Kefir (click on that) as it is a probiotic and will pretty much not allow bad infectuous germs to get in my system.
Yep! I have made up my mind....not to take!

Candles Again!

It is the middle of April and the ground is covered with snow!!!! What is up with that. I will have to make the day better with candles! I have found a little shop in the Brookside area of Kansas City. It is called the 5B Candle shop. They make their own candles right there in the shop. They only make votive size candles and the smell is the best!!!!! It can be overwhelming to try to choose the scents you want to bring home with you because there are so many. At Christmas time I took my youngest son in to let him pick out a dozen votive candles to take back to California. I was smelling all the holiday scents as he was going along the wall checking them all out. He said, "Hey, here is one that is called 'the bottom of mom's purse'!" I asked if it smelled like gum....sure enough, it does! :?)
I find that if I put my votive candles in a container they fit into exactly they last longer. So, I buy the cheap clear cylindrical votive candle holders at WalMart and place them inside the prettier candle holders! I only run one scent at a time. All the other candle holders have unscented tea lights in them. I look for those bargains where you get 100 tea lights at half off and then I stock up on those!
Ahhhh....let the scent begin!

Ironing

When I was in sixth grade my sister went off to college. That meant that the family ironing became my job! Ugh! Mom would call me in from playing with the neighbor kids to do the ironing. There were still three kids at home and Mom and Dad! In those days you sprinkled the clothes to get them damp and then you put them in the freezer to freeze them before ironing. I detested ironing.
When Gary and I were newly weds we had several spats over the issue of ironing. He was disappointed to get up and get ready only to find I had not ironed anything! One day I sat in Sunday School observing a young man whose clothes were disgustingly wrinkled. I decided right then and there that my husband would never go in public looking as though his wife did not love him!
I started ironing for him on a consistent basis. When the kids came along, I felt like I could not let them go in public looking like their mother did not love them. So, back to ironing for three kids and Mom and Dad! There was a time I actually kept up with all the ironing by racing against the dryer. I tried to get one load ironed before the next load dried in the dryer.
The kids are gone but I still iron for him. Often, I still think, "only because I love him!" I think he too is aware that his ironed clothes are there for him because I love him!

Modern Conveniences

While Tricia was nursing Zion yesterday she had the fun of reading a book I had in my yellow room. The name of the book is How to Bring Up a Baby A Hand Book for Mothers. This book was my grandmothers to be used for raising my mother who just turned 89 last week! It was put out by Procter and Gamble.
This is just one of the interesting statements we found in the book.
It is describing a modern convenience for bathing.
"A porcelain bath-tub with hot and cold water, a shower bath and a needle bath, in which tiny jets of water sting the skin into a ruddy glow, are desirable - When they can be had. Towels and Ivory Soap are indispensable additions to such luxuries.
Fortunately for those who can not afford a palatial bath room, it is not an absolute necessity for either health or comfort.
Substitute
A square of oilcloth, rubber cloth, or table oilcloth, a good-sized basin and a pail of water can take its place without detriment. A cake of Ivory Soap is within reach of every mother and with this she can keep the skin of her children in perfect condition.
A somewhat more elaborate equipment consists of a portable tin or porcelain bath-tub, a washcloth or a piece of flannelette, a sponge, a cake of Ivory Soap, a bath thermometer and a couple of very soft towels.
The water should be soft and of a temperature of 95 degrees in winter and from 85 to 90 in summer. Satisfy yourself by the termometer that it is neither too hot or too cold."

Gall Stones

The subject of gall stones came up yesterday. I have read that some people have been able to dissolve them with 1/2 cup of olive oil and a whole grapefruit juiced and mixed with the olive oil.
Also, a weekend fast with Epsom salt drinks has been suggested...but I think I would go with the oil and grapefruit. I have not tried this in that I have never had trouble with gall stones.

Candle Containers

This post has nothing to do with health issues. I just want to share about what I do with my candle containers. First of all, I am not just choosy about my candles...I am also choosy about the containers I get my candles in!
Those containers get cleaned out thoroughly and reused for all kinds of things.
  • Some actually make great drinking glasses
  • seeds
  • beans
  • nuts
  • pumpkin seeds (a beneficial food for those of us who are O blood types)
  • foods in my refrigerator (like the blueberries or cherries or pineapple chunks or mango chunks...yum!)
  • coffee
  • coconut oil (ohhhh....that will be a later posting! :?)
  • beads
  • dried flower petals
  • potpourri
  • Use it as a flower vase
  • paper clips
  • rubber bands
  • different types of glues
  • Hair clips and pony tail holders
  • I might even put a new candle in it!

Well, obviously I burn lots of candles~

Castor Oil

The subject of infected eyes has come up several times recently. Because Castor oil (you find it with the laxatives) is a cathartic it draws out the infection. If I feel that my eyes are getting a sty or pink eye I start putting on the Castor oil and then cover my eyes with a nice hot wash cloth. It works!
My favorite Castor oil story is one that happened to Jonathan while he was in elementary school. He had something on his knee that looked to me like a boil. Knowing that if I took him to the doctor he would be put on antibiotics, I started using Castor oil with hot packs as that had once worked for a boil I had on my forehead. It was not working as well for Jonathan but I kept trying. We went to his great grandma's house where I was informed by relatives that it was not a boil, but rather a brown recluse bite! I felt like the worse mother in the world. I did take him to the doctor who confirmed the brown recluse bite. However, she did nothing for Jonathan telling me to continue to do what I was doing because it was working better than anything she could do for it!
Now, I am not saying you should not go to the doctor if you have a brown recluse bite! But, do add this to whatever they have you do! Jonathan's bite never did get to the bone...which on a knee is right there!
You will probably see other Castor oil advise show up later. I use it for other stuff!!!

MSM and Allergies

Yesterday a friend grabbed me at church and asked, "Hey Joyce, what can he take for his allergies?"
A few years back I was taking MSM for my tennis elbow. MSM is something you will find in the medicine cabinets of the elderly as it is helpful with the joint problems.
We had a young lady staying at our house for a few weeks and I found her quite stressed and hunting for something among her things. I was shocked to find out that she was looking for her MSM! I thought it was for old people! It turned out that she takes it for her allergies. I have since used it for that purpose myself and, though it does not get rid of them completely, I do much better with the allergies and do not have to take those awful meds!!!!

Probiotics

Recently there have been several who have had lingering colds that seem to only get worse and go into other respiratory "junk". I told my friend to take probiotics and lo and behold the next day her doctor told her to do the same thing!
This is what I read to her from
The Maker's Diet (click on that if you wish)
"Cultured/fermented vegetables
Fermented vegetables such as sauerkraut, pickled carrots, beets, or cucumbers are some of the most health-giving foods on the planet. Raw cultured or fermented vegetables provide the body with beneficial microorganisms known as probiotics and an abundance of enzymes. They are also a rich source of many vitamins, including vitamin C, and are very easy to digest. Sauerkraut (fermented cabbage) contains nearly four times the cancer-fighting nutrients as unfermented cabbage and is the primary source of vegetable nutrition in many countries where the winters are cold. Cultured/fermented vegetables are very easy to make and are readily available at health food stores everywhere."

Kefir and yogurt are also good sources for this. However, just use the plain as the sugar actually kills the live lacto bacilli. If you have a yeast infection this stuff is great, but you need to go off sugar completely as the yeast feeds off of sugar, including fruit!!!!

Ingrown Toenails

Recently a friend informed me that they were suffering from an ingrown toenail! I used to suffer from those a lot! Years ago when my boys were babies I read that if you put vitamin E on the toenail it would heal rather quickly. Much to my surprise....it did. So, if I feel a hint of pain I get the E out and never get the ingrown toenail!!!!
